The Civil Rights Movement of America served as the impetus for some of modern culture’s most outstanding socio-structural movements. The political, social, and intellectual landmarks that followed the Movement generated core changes in the conceptualization of freedom of expression – most notably, art. At the forefront of the manifestation of art into the written word were southern women writers such as Maya Angelou, Shirley Ann Grau, Harriet Jacobs, Sue Monk Kidd, and Alice Walker.
